Why hamsters love deep bedding

In the wild, hamsters live in burrows. Deep bedding lets them express that natural instinct at home.

The burrowing instinct

Digging and tunneling are natural behaviors. Many keepers aim for at least 6 inches (15 cm) of bedding, and more where space allows, so your hamster can dig real tunnels.

Gentle guidance on materials

  • Soft, unscented paper bedding and kiln-dried aspen shavings are popular choices
  • Soft hay can be mixed in to help tunnels hold their shape
  • Many keepers avoid cedar and pine shavings and scented products, which can irritate little lungs and skin

Easy ways to start

  • Add a little more bedding at each refresh
  • Create a deeper dig zone in one corner
  • When you clean, replace just the soiled parts and keep some familiar bedding, since the smell is comforting

Every extra inch is a step toward a more natural home.
