How much space does a hamster need?

Hamsters are tiny, but their world doesn't have to be. Here's a friendly way to think about space.

Floor space is what counts

In the wild, hamsters travel long distances every night. Many experienced keepers and welfare-minded hamster communities suggest at least about 20 x 28 inches (50 x 70 cm) of unbroken floor, and ideally closer to 20 x 40 inches (50 x 100 cm) when you can.

If that sounds big, you're not alone. Many of us were told much smaller homes were fine. Today we know more, so it's a lovely upgrade to work toward.

Why tall, multi-level cages aren't needed

Hamsters aren't great climbers, and falls can hurt them. A wide, low habitat with lots of bedding usually works better than a tall one.

Easy ways to get there

  • A large glass or plastic tank or terrarium with a secure, well-ventilated mesh lid
  • A big storage bin with a large mesh-covered opening (small mesh holes and smooth edges)
  • A ready-made habitat in the size you want, with extra floor space and low platforms

Whichever you choose, check that your hamster can't squeeze through gaps or chew free.
